What do I do if my account may have been compromised?

If your account has been compromised you may be unable to send email until you complete the actions below. Before taking any other action, perform a password reset. If you have any questions or once you have finished, please call the ITS Service Desk at 850-644-4357(HELP), M-F, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Sign in using Outlook Web App (OWA) and view all options

To help ensure your account is safe, we will complete each action using Outlook Web App instead of a standalone client such as Outlook or Thunderbird.

  1. Go to https://outlook.com/my.fsu.edu.
  2. Sign in with your email address (fsuid@my.fsu.edu) and password.
  3. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Click Options
    • The remaining steps will assume that you are starting from the Options page.

Check your Inbox Rules

When an attacker compromises an email account they may add rules to move or delete all email automatically, hoping the account owner does not see any signs of the compromise.

  1. Using the left menu navigate to Mail > Automatic Processing > Inbox Rules.
  2. For any Inbox rule listed that you do not recognize click on it to highlight it and click the trash can icon to delete it.

Check your automatic replies

  1. Using the left menu navigate to Mail > Automatic Processing > Inbox Rules.
  2. If automatic replies are being sent, ensure that it contains only information you set.

Check your E-Mail signature

  1. Using the left menu navigate to Mail > Layout > Email signature.
  2. Check your e-mail signature to ensure it does not contain any links or information you did not set

Check your Safe Senders

  1. Using the left menu navigate to Mail > Automatic Processing > Inbox Rules.
  2. Check the list of Blocked Senders for addresses you did not put there.

Check to see if you are forwarding e-mail

  1. Using the left menu navigate to Mail > Accounts > Forwarding.
  2. If forwarding is turned on, check that it is to an email address that you input.

Ensure that you have junk email filtering turned on

  1. Follow the instructions located here.

Check your Deleted Items folder for missing emails

  1. Return to your Inbox by clicking Outlook in the upper-left corner.
  2. Select the Deleted Items folder from the left (You may have to select More just below Inbox to see the Deleted Items folder).
  3. Look through the items to ensure that there aren't any unrecognized emails that you would not have deleted present.

Send an email from a non-FSU email address

To confirm that your email is functioning normally, send and reply to an email from outside the University, such as a Yahoo! or Gmail account. If you are unable to send or receive email and you have completed the actions above please call the ITS Service Desk at 850-644-4357(HELP), M-F, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
