Florida State University's Information Technology Services offers web hosting for FSU affiliates (faculty, staff and students) to post their individual web sites. Users upload and make changes to their web site using "WebDAV". The sites are hosted at "http://myweb.fsu.edu/YOURFSUID".
This facility will replace the previous garnet and mailer web sites that were accessed using SSH/SFTP. As a result, ITS will no longer be accepting requests for new garnet or mailer shell accounts. Users who have an existing site on garnet or mailer are encouraged to move to "myweb.fsu.edu".
What Is WebDAV?
WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning". For folks who maintain websites at FSU, it is simply a method for accessing the web server to upload and modify websites.
How do I request an individual web site for myself?
Submit a Case to request your WebDAV account. You will be sent an email when your webserver space is created. You will use your FSUID username and password (same as your OMNI or FSU Webmail username/password) to access the site.
How do I request individual web sites for all of the students in my class?
If you are an instructor requiring students to create web pages for your course, submit a support request and request myweb.fsu.edu sites be set-up for the entire class. Provide the course reference number and course title in the email. We will retrieve the list of students enrolled in the class and create the myweb.fsu.edu sites for them. This will be faster than having the students individually email in to request their myweb.fsu.edu sites.
Where do I put my files?
To set up the connection to WebDAV, you will use a WebDAV URL. The WebDAV URL will be something like:
(where yourFSUID would be replaced with your actual FSUID).
You can set up WebDAV access from your web editing program (such as Dreamweaver) or directly (on Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X).
Below are some clients and instructions for configuration:
- Dreamweaver (must have version 8.0 or newer)
- Windows Network Places for Windows XP and Windows Vista
- Windows 7
- Mac OS X
If you are using Windows 7 or 8, and you know your WebDAV URL, you may need to use one of the following HTTPS-supported WebDAV clients instead:
You can NOT modify and change your files using WebDAV through a web browser (such Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc). You may be able to access your site using the WebDAV URL in your browser, but you will not be able to upload or edit any of your files that way.
How do I view my site?
Uploaded files will show up in your live website at: http://myweb.fsu.edu/yourFSUID
This is where you and others will go to view your site. Please note this is a different URL from the WebDAV URL that you use to modify your site.
How do I know if I already have a myweb.fsu.edu site?
Go to: http://myweb.fsu.edu/YOURFSUID in a web browser window.
If you get "Not Found", you need to submit a case to request a myweb.fsu.edu site.
Otherwise, if you get a page like the one below that has "Index of /YOURFSUID" or any other content, then you already have a myweb.fsu.edu site.
If you currently have a individual website on mailer or garnet (http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~username or http://mailer.fsu.edu/~username), then a myweb.fsu.edu site has already been created for you. But you are responsible for moving your web site pages from the mailer or garnet public_html folder to the myweb.fsu.edu WebDAV space. You can submit a case to request assistance moving your site from garnet or mailer to myweb.fsu.edu.
Can I keep my site after I graduate?
There is no way to permanently keep a WebDAV account after an individual has graduated. While it is not expected for the account to be deleted immediately, do not expect the account to exist any further than 6 months after graduation.
