How do I remote into my computer at work from home?

There are three ways to remotely sign into AnyConnect

AnyConnect without a profile (Most Common)

1. The employee will install the VPN AnyConnect software on their home computer by going to their browser and enter http://vpn.fsu.edu. Hit Enter Key.

2. Next, enter your FSUID and Password. This will open you up to the VPN service menu.

3. Find the AnyConnect link in the middle of the page, click on AnyConnect to install the software. It is a self guided install.

4. Next check your home computer to make sure that you have enabled remote connection. If this is not allowed, you will not be able to connect from home or on the road to your work computer. The follow demonstrates how to turn on remote connection. Click on Start > Control Panel > Click on System. In Windows, click the Remote tab and then select the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box. In Windows Server, click the Remote tab and then select the Enable Remote Desktop on this computer check box. Click OK.

5. After you've installed AnyConnect software and enabled remote connection, REBOOT your computer!

6. Go to your Start Button>Select All Programs>

7. Select Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

8. Enter in "Connect to" - http:/vpn.fsu.edu

9. Enter your FSUID and password.

10. Click Connect button.

11. Go back to your Start Button>Select All programs>Select Accessories>Select Remote Desktop connect.

12. When menu appears, enter your work computers IP address. Also, if you have access to more FSU resources, click on the down arrow, select Browse for more which views a list of available computers on the domain. You may or may not have access to these resources. Try clicking on it and see if you have access. If not, talk with your supervisor and IT staff about special access. If no one in your area can help, please enter a Service Desk ticket and enter the information on what FSU resource(s) you are unable to connect.

13. Click Connect. You are now using the VPN Services

 

New VPN AnyConnect Client Software Installation - with a Profile Name

1. Profile Name. FSU staff should get their VPN Profile name from their IT staff or supervisor so that they will have permissions to network resources from home or on the road. The profile name gives special permissions to staff that require access to a special FSU resources i.e. remote access to work computer, databases, network drives, remote access while traveling on the road and so on.

2. The employee will install the VPN AnyConnect software on their home computer by entering the following link in their browser, along with their profile name: http://vpn.fsu.edu/profilename Hit Enter Key.

3. Next, enter your FSUID and Password. This will open up to the VPN service menu.

4. Find the AnyConnect link in the middle of the page, click on AnyConnect to install the software. It is a self guided install.

5. Next check your home computer to make sure that you enabled remote connection: Click on Start> Control Panel>Click on System. In Windows, click the Remote tab and then select the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box. In Windows Server, click the Remote tab and then select the Enable Remote Desktop on this computer check box. Click OK. To view a list of available computers on a domain, open Remote Desktop Connection, click the arrow next to Computer, and select Browse for more.

6. After installing AnyConnect software and enabling remote connection, REBOOT your computer

7. Go to your Start Button>Select All Programs>

9. Enter in "Connect to" - http://vpn.fsu.edu/profilename

10. Enter your FSUID and password.

12. You've selected the FSU resource, now Click Connect button.

13. Go back to your Start Button>Select All programs>Select Accessories>Select Remote Desktop connect.

14. Enter your work computers IP address

15. Click Connect. You are now using the VPN Services

 

Troubleshooting

Reminder - Before the employee goes home they must know their work computers IP address, and what resources at work they would like to connect to. Again, discuss this with your IT staff or supervisor.

Helpful Tidbit - The employee should send an e-mail to their self with their work IP address so that they will have the IP address in an e-mail for later reference at home or while traveling so that they can connect to FSU resources.

How to find your work computer IP address

  • Click on the start button> Select All Programs> Select Accessories> Select command prompt.
  • Make sure your command prompt is at C drive. Enter C: and hit the enter key. Enter IPconfig/all (no spaces).
  • The screen will show your work computers IP address. If at all possible, please try and get a screen shot of the page by using the Print Screen key. Paste to a Word file and submit a case.

Why do I need a Profile name? - The employee may need a profile name so that the employee has the network permissions to allow access to their work computer from home. A firewall or ACL maybe blocking the employee. The employees IT techs should be able to help setup the employee to have access to their work computer from home.

Unable to connect - Start with a co-worker that already had their computer setup for VPN services or ask the IT staff to help. If you have a bad experience with the VPN, please submit a case. Also, when calling, have available your IP address at work, Department, Building, FSUID name and explain what you want to do or what you want access to. i.e. application, network drives, web server, work computer, etc.

Possible problem: You may need to download an update to java for free to your home computer http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_ie.jsp. Please reboot the computer and start again.
