What are the recommended settings for versioning and document checkout?

ITS recommends that site owners enable versioning and check out for document libraries. Versioning keeps previous versions of documents available that can be restored at any time. Check out ensures that documents are only being edited by one person at a time, to prevent the possibility of competing versions or lost changes. Documents can not be edited in Office Online if checkout is enabled on a document library. For instructions to enable versioning or check out click here.
